Syllabus and Classroom Expectations

Course Description:

            Food choices are a result of our psychological and physiological needs.  These needs reflect our food knowledge, experiences and the environment around us.  In this course we will gain knowledge of food nutrients and their sources.  We will also work to develop the necessary cooking skills to prepare and preserve foods, with the intent of increasing their nutritional contributions to our diet.

 

Course Outline:


1.  Nutrition (Week 1-3)

     -General wellness

     -Nutrition and nutrients

     -Food Guide Pyramid and Dietary Guidelines

2.  Food Skills (Weeks 4-7)

     -Consumerism

     -Using appliances and equipment

     -Using a recipe

     -Basic cooking and microwave techniques

     -Sanitation and safety

3.  Meal Time (Week 8)

     -Work Plans and work schedules

     -Serving a meal

     -Packing a lunch

4.  Lab and Nutrition Review (Weeks 9-18)

     -Dairy products

     -Fruits and vegetables

     -Protein foods

     -Baking

     -Combination foods


 

Grading:

            Your class grade will be determined by the total points you earn over the course of the semester.  Your semester grade is divided into the following categories.  (These percentages are averages; I reserve the right to adjust them as needed.)

 

            25% Homework and Early Work

            30% Tests and Quizzes

            30% Lab activities

            15% Final Exam

 

The standard Pius X High School grading scale is used to determine your final letter grade.


99 – 100  A +

95 – 98                    A

93 – 94                    A-

91 – 92                    B+

87 – 90                    B

85 – 86                    B-

83 – 84                    C+

79 – 82                    C

77 – 78                    C-

75 – 76                    D+

72 – 74                    D

70 – 71                    D-

Below 70                F   


I regularly update grades on line, but I would be happy to print you an individual grade report at any time.  Please ask, and you can pick it up later in the day.

            For your own information, I do send home more progress reports at progress report time than required.  I feel that your parents should be well informed of your progress in class and should also have the opportunity to discuss any of their concerns.

 

Assignment Policy:

A.  Late Work

                It is your responsibility to keep up in class and to turn assignments in on time.  You cannot fully profit from what we’re currently studying, if you are working on past assignments.  To receive full credit, it is your responsibility to have assignments completed and personally turned in to the “Collection Box” when due.  If you do not, I consider your assignments late.

I will accept late assignments for a three-day period, but your grade will be penalized 25% per school day.  After the third class day, it will no longer be accepted.  This policy gives you the opportunity to complete the work, receive partial credit, and not jeopardize your grade average.  (I consider any assignments turned in the day due, but later than requested, one day late.)

Should you have late assignments to turn in, it is your responsibility to personally place them in the “Late Box.”  At the end of each school day, I will stamp them with the date, and they will be scored accordingly.  I promise to have them graded by the next report period, but they may not be ready before your next test or quiz.  (Another reason to get your assignments in on time!) 

 

B.  Absence Make Up:

            When absent and excused, it is your responsibility to personally:

 

1.       Write down what you missed from the “Class Schedule” on my bulletin board.

2.        Request any handouts or assignments needed outside of class time.

3.       Answer your “Early Work” question(s), being sure to write the word ABSENT by that question’s date(s).  (More on this later!)

4.       Turn in any assignments that were due while you were absent to the “Late Box” being sure to label them with the following:  (I was absent on ________ at the top.  Without this helpful reminder at the top of your paper, I will assume the paper is late, and charge the 25% per day rule.  I will not remind you to turn in assignments.  That is your responsibility!

5.       Complete and turn in any assignments given while you were absent to the “Late Box” being sure to label them with the following:  (I was absent on _______ at the top.  Remember you do have 2 days to turn in makeup work.  After the 2 day grace period the 25% per day rule will apply.  Again, I will not remind you to turn in assignments.  That is your responsibility.

 

C.  Planned Absences:

            Bring the completed sign out sheet or parent note to me, outside of class time, as soon as possible. I normally have lesson plans complete a month in advance so the sooner the better for all of us!  Please note, I will not sign sheets that do not have parent or sponsor signatures, dates etc.  

 

D.  Tests and Quizzes:

            Yes there will be planned tests and quizzes in this class.  The dates for these are announced in class at least a week in advance.  I also give unannounced open note quizzes .  So come prepared to class!

            If you are absent and excused the day of a test or quiz, it is your responsibility to set a time outside of class to complete it.  As with any other make up, you have two days to make it up and then the late work policy applies. Again, I will not remind you to make up tests and quizzes.  That is your responsibility.

            Please note that if you are here for the review you are expected to take the test.  We will discuss other test/quiz procedures prior to our first one.

 

E.  Extra Credit:

            Extra credit is never given to individual students; it is given to the class as a whole on rare occasions.

 

Contact Information:

            I arrive at 7:50 a.m. and generally leave at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. On Tuesday and Thursday I generally leave by 3:35 p.m.  My 1st semester schedule is:

Should you need assistance, please first attempt to schedule an appointment during one of my free periods or either of the previously mentioned times.  If none of these times work, I will come earlier in the morning, but you must be 100% committed to coming!  You are also welcome to e-mail me with your questions:  amy.shonka@piusx.net

 

Materials:

            You are expected to come prepared to class each day!  You will need to bring the following supplies with you:

 

1.  A pencil or a pen (be sure to select a color that is easy to read)

2.  A folder for handouts and assignments

3.  Paper to take notes and complete assignments   

4.  A textbook or teacher made resource binder 

5.  On occasion, you may be assigned to bring specific items or equipment to class like

     rulers or calculators

 

Should you come to class unprepared, you will not be allowed to leave to get needed items nor will I provide them for you.  Please also note, you are responsible for any excessive damage (or loss) done to textbooks and/or resource binders.  You will be billed for the cost of the textbook’s replacement or $10 for the resource binder.

 

Classroom Rules:

            1.  Be honest…with your work, your parents, your teacher, your peers and

     yourself.

            2.  Be respectful of your time, your teacher’s and your peers’.

            3.  Be courteous and respectful to others and their materials in the room at all times.

            4.  Be responsible for yourself and your actions.

            5.  Be safe and ensure the safety of those around you.

            6.  Be in compliance with all school expectations set out in the student handbook.

 

Miscellaneous Items:

1.  We will have an alphabetical seating chart for a period of time.  After that time, I will          

      assign one conducive to classroom learning.

2.  For your convenience the semester schedule, grade scale, period schedule, and master           

     school year schedule are posted in my classroom.

3.  Additional copies of assignments and reviews are posted on Black Board.  You may

     print them as needed.

4.  Textbooks are to be covered at all times.
