Good
morning!
Typically I like to send these out
at the START of the week, but I knew I was going to be able to share some good
news if I waited, so here I am.
The good news: Pius has been
selected for the second straight year for the Catholic High School Honor
Roll! We are the only high school in Nebraska to receive this honor, which lists (in no order)
the top 50 Catholic high schools in America, based on academic
achievement, Catholic identity and civic education. This honor is a nice
affirmation of the work we are trying to accomplish at Pius X High School.
I congratulate our faculty, staff, students, parents and parishes for sharing in
this award.
Other news
items:
- Congratulations to
Coach Bill Rice and the boys tennis team who finished third in last week’s
state tournament. They had an excellent season and we are proud of
them!
- If you missed the
Fall play last weekend, you missed a treat. Mr. Joe Moser and his cast
and crew have certainly lived up to the high standard our theater department
has set over the past many years. A colleague who really knows theater
commented on how difficult it is to do comedy well; our Pius Players did
comedy well. I want to give special notice to Megan Sugrue, who broke
her foot last week but didn’t have it casted until Tuesday so it wouldn’t
interfere with her role in the play. How’s that for gritty
determination? Apparently someone told her to “break a leg” and she
missed…
- I want you to know
about a new resource for parents to help talk to teens about drug and alcohol
use, or to know what to do if their teens are showing signs of drug or alcohol
problems. Sponsored by the Partnership for Drug-Free America, there is a
new toll-free phone number (888-870-1812) that is available from 7 a.m. to 7
p.m. The partnership’s research shows that kids who learn about risks of
drug abuse from the parents are up to 50% less likely to use drugs. At
the same time, 60% of parents say they need help in talking to their kids
about drugs or alcohol. Please take advantage of this resource and equip
yourself as well as you can in working to solve this serious
issue.
- The SOADA Club is
doing what it can to provide healthy alternatives for our kids. Tomorrow
night there is an “All-School Gathering” at Pius from 7:30 – 10:30. All
Pius students are invited to a fun night of dodgeball, poker, movies, games
and more!!! And best of all…it’s FREE!
- Tomorrow’s PSAT has
changed to a 7:30 a.m. start time, and will be done at
11.
- Today is the last day
of the quarter. We expect report cards to go out late next
week.
Have a great
weekend.
God
bless,
tom
