The Catholic High School Honor Roll announced its third annual selection of the best 50 Catholic secondary schools in America. The Honor Roll provides a powerful resource to parents and educators by acknowledging those schools that best maintain high academic standards, uphold their Catholic identities, and prepare students to actively engage the world.

Among this year’s top 50 is Pius X High School. There are currently 963 students in grades 9-12 at Pius. Pius X is the only school honored in Nebraska; they also scored among the top 25 schools in the category of civic education. Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of the Diocese of Lincoln expressed his happiness of this news. “It was a joy to receive the information…that Pius X High School in the City of Lincoln, has been commended for its educational excellence and has been named to the 2006 Catholic High School Honor Roll as one of 50 best Catholic High Schools in the United States,” he said. “Being recognized nationally is a well-deserved honor for our school, and one deserving of the congratulations extended to its administrators, faculty, staff, students and their parents for their hard work. Their commitment to Catholic education has helped make Pius X Catholic High School a success.”

In response to this great honor, Father Morin, Superintendent, issued the following statement:

“I am grateful that Pius X High School has received this honor. Being recognized by the Catholic High School Honor Roll is a reflection on the extraordinary efforts of our administrators, faculty, staff and students. I am especially grateful to our parents and parish families who so generously support our only Catholic high school in Lincoln. Their commitment and dedication provides the opportunity for Pius X High School to offer the best Catholic education possible.”

Mr. Tom Korta, principal, also issued the following statement:

“For 50 years Pius X High School has cultivated a Tradition of Faith through the cooperative efforts of teachers, staff, students, parents and our local parishes. Being recognized by the Catholic High School Honor Roll as one of the top 50 Catholic high schools in the United States is an honor to be shared by all who have joined in our effort to “Restore all things in Christ.”

Nearly 1,300 Catholic high schools were invited to apply to the Honor Roll by completing surveys that measure academic excellence, Catholic identity, and civic education. With this high level of competition, inclusion on the Honor Roll indicates outstanding success in each of the disciplines examined.

Advisory board member Gerard Bradley, professor of law at the University of Notre Dame Law School, said the Honor Roll serves an important purpose. “High schools that are fulfilling well their mission to form students morally and intellectually deserve to be recognized,” he said. “The Honor Roll brings recognition to these outstanding schools."

“The Honor Roll has certainly developed a greater awareness among Catholics that excellence in Catholic education means more than just excelling in academics,” explained Honor Roll consultant Kevin Schmiesing. “The best schools also have a vibrant Catholic identity and prepare students for fruitful vocations in politics, business, and the Church.”
