This is National Arts in Education Week. To celebrate we are highlighting parts of the art program at Pius X High School.

Laurie Rodaway, a 1979 Pius X Alumnus, is an art teacher at Pius X. She answered questions about her own experience as an art student, and as an art teacher.

On her art classes as a student

"I took a lot of art classes and I did like art, and I had a great teacher Mrs. Jan Schutte. I am sure she had an impact. She opened up the world of art to me as far as the way she taught."

On her approach to teaching art

"We want them not only to make art, but appreciate art, and see the beauty of art in the world. We are especially lucky to be able to talk about our faith in the arts and the purpose and beauty of art to draw us closer to God."

On working with varied students

"Everybody is at a different place with art. Everybody has their own life experiences, so they are all at a different place. In class we are looking at historical and critical aspects of art to try to help them make their own decisions about art, not just what we (teachers) think."

On the role of art in school

"There's a quote from Albert Einstein, 'Creativity is intelligence having fun.' I think using your creative mind is the future, being able to see beyond the boundaries and problem solving in a creative way."
