This is National Arts in Education Week. To celebrate we are highlighting parts of the art program at Pius X High School.

Avry Victor, junior, is the first student at Pius X High School to receive a National Silver Medal from 2017 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. She won for her ink board work titled 'Mulatto'. She attended Cathedral of the Risen Christ. She answered questions about her art education:

What art means to her:

"I like that I can express myself however I want, and it means something to me and it can mean something different to someone else."

When did you start being 'an artist':

"Honestly, since I’ve been able to hold a crayon. I’ve always liked it and my mom was really good at it, and she enjoyed it and I got it from her."

How art helps with school

"It helps with stress so it’s good to get away from homework, and since I want this as a career it helps me further my path."

On art and her faith

"Some of my favorite pieces are ones that are in our faith. It’s a different way of expressing your faith, rather than praying and singing. It helps me get closer to God.

On 'Mulatto':

"It was kind of just me. It’s not of me, it symbolized me, and I am mixed race, and you could see that through the piece. It’s not of me, but you could still see that it is me."

"Originally I was not excited about the assignment. I had never done scratch board, and I didn’t want to do this. This was not interesting, but then it started to mean something."

Feelings on winning the award:

"It’s really reassuring to me because I do want a career in art, and Andy Warhol and others have won these awards, so it says to me, "Ok, I can do this for a career.' It’s like a confidence boost. Plus it means a lot because it is cool."

On her future:

"My ultimate goal is to be an artist, but I know that it's really hard. Any job I can be myself and be creative."
