Biology teacher Mikeala Petersen arranged an engaging, hands-on activity for students to better understand chemical reactions.

Transcript

You guys have now been denatured, meaning that your structure has been removed. You guys are going to try to have your chemical reaction taking place by putting the pennies heads up.

For our enzyme lab, we are simulating what happens if a chemical reaction is taking place so the pennies represent the substrates or reactants that are going to be working with the enzyme, which is our hands, to complete a chemical reaction getting from the floor to the table.

So then they had some denaturation which is taking the hand removing the structure and adding a tennis ball which just inhibits it a little bit more making that chemical reaction unlikely.
