Lenten Reading

The church calls us to grow closer to Christ during Lent through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  We are also encouraged to deepen our faith and love for Christ through spiritual reading.  In monastic communities, Lent is a time of dedicated, purposeful reading.  Saint Benedict writes in the Rule: “during this time of Lent each one is to receive a book from the library, and is to read the whole of it straight through.”

This practice does not need to apply exclusively to religious orders – it can be a valuable practice for lay people as well!  In the modern information age, it is becoming more and more difficult to fully read the whole of something “straight through”, as Benedict recommends.  But that can be a sacrifice as well as a challenge for us during Lent.

If you are already a reader, Lent is the perfect time to recommit to sacred reading, and to re-evaluate your reading priorities.  It is a chance to make the conscious choice to read a spiritual book and carve out time each day to make sacred reading a priority.  Read with more attention and consideration, and allow God to shed his light through your daily reading.

The Pius library will feature spiritual books with daily readings by church fathers during March and April.   Visit the library to check out these and other titles:
