A group of Pius X Academic Decathlon students took a trip to the Joslyn art museum in Omaha last Saturday.
The main reason for this Saturday morning trip was because the Joslyn holds a painting by John Singer Sargent, one of the artists for this year’s Academic Decathlon art section.
The Joslyn not only had a John Singer Sargent painting, but also paintings by other important artists including Rembrandt, Alfred Bierstadt and Bouguereau, for this year’s theme of In Sickness and In Health.
“I think it was perfect. It had the Sargent piece, but it also had different artists that were peripheral to some of the pieces we’re looking at,” Pius X Academic Decathlon teacher Ann Kotopka said.
Fourteen students attended and Kotopka was pleased with the student turnout seeing as it was a football Saturday and a quickly put together field trip.
“I went on the trip because after reading all the art history and learning about it in class I was curious to see if my perspective had totally shifted from the last time that I went to an art museum and it had,” freshman Jenna Kramer said.
The day ended with lunch at Spaghetti Works.
“I think it was worth giving up my Saturday morning for, because I got to see beautiful artwork and eat a delicious lunch with a bunch of my friends,” Kramer said.
