AP Human Geography class includes fundraiser as part of lesson

For most American children, food and education are commodities that are easy to take for granted. If they’re served a bowl of porridge at lunch, many wouldn’t get it, or may only take a bite or two before throwing it away. But for the children of Zambia , that one bowl could mean everything.

Pius X students in Sheila Sievert’s AP Human Geography are aiming to help a cause as part of their learning.

Mary’s Meals is a registered charity that provides these bowls to poor children around the world. It was founded in 1992 by Scottish brothers Magnus Macfarlene-Barrow and Fergus MacFarlene-Barrow, whose goal is to help the children focus on education rather than finding food, which can lift them out of poverty later in life.

“The goal of this project is to let Pius students have the opportunity to feed fellow students that aren’t as well off as them,” says design team member Aubrey Bucknell.

Pius is doing a collaboration with Mary’s meals where we’re helping fund their mission through the sale of t-shirts.

“For $12, you can buy one Mary’s Meals shirt, and for only $20, you and a friend can buy a pair of shirts,” says finance manager Easton Gubbels. “Just that pair of shirts would feed a Zambian kid for a whole year.”
