BOLT Letter – Fr. James Meysenburg

Dear Parents and Friends,

It’s very difficult to adequately express how happy and grateful I feel to begin this school year with most of our students in person and some who need to learn remotely. Here we are back in school after a five month hiatus. Wiping the smile from my face seems impossible right now. I am extraordinarily proud of my fellow administrators, our teachers, staff members and so many others for their incredible hard work, sacrifice and persistence to devise the plans, fluid as they are, to get us back in school and to be as safe as is reasonably possible. Tom Korta’s work navigating the waters of uncertainty and choreographing the back to school plan was inspiring to witness.

And the students – They are ROCK STARS! They are following the guidelines and rules of wearing a mask and social distancing, recognizing that it is more about keeping others safe than it is about keeping themselves safe. They make the sacrifices, especially for those in the community that might be more vulnerable to the COVID-19 virus. Their efforts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, while at the same time recognizing the absolute importance of in-person education, teamwork, exercise and our faith community, are heroic. I am edified by them and was overwhelmed with emotion as we celebrated our traditional opening day Mass in a different way. There we all were on Aldrich Field, clad in masks and maintaining appropriate social distancing, praying together. It was a powerful sight to behold and a great reminder of Pope Pius X’s call to Restore All Things in Christ.

A special welcome to all our new students, faculty, staff and families! We have 296 ninth graders and 1184 students attending Pius X High School. I want to introduce some of our veteran staff with new assignments and our new staff members:

• Shelly Pick, former guidance counselor, is now the Director of Counseling and part of the administrative team.

• Greg Lesiak, former assistant principal, is now the Activities/Athletic Director and part of the administrative team.

• Leah Bethune (2000 Pius X Alumna) is the new Assistant Principal. She has spent 12 years in both public school and Catholic school teaching and administration assignments.

• Tim Issacs is the new counselor. He spent 27 years as teacher, counselor, mentor and coach at Syracuse Public Schools.

• Missy Kinzie, Heather Scheffler, and Holly Poole are the new administrative assistants in the front office and counseling office.

• Jackie Hilger, Jamie Jakub (1995 Pius X Alumna) and Ryan Seib (2013 Pius X Alumnus) are new para-educators.

• Fr. Robert Froeschl, Fr. Caleb Hile (2012 Pius X Alumnus), Fr. Robert Johnson, Father Andrew Litt (2009 Pius X Alumnus), Father Alec Sasse (2012 Pius X Alumnus) and Father Justin Wylie (who is returning to teach at Pius X while being Rector of Cathedral) are joining the theology department. Fathers Froeschl, Hile, Johnson and Sasse are newly ordained this past May.

• Abbigail Allen, Thomas Johnson and Michelle Kratky are new members to the English department.

• Brian Carlson is new Computer Science teacher. He comes to us after a 20 year career as development director, teacher, coach and administrator at College View Academy.

• Sarah Stokes is a new ABLE teacher.

• Leah Zohner is a new Chemistry teacher.

• Russ Hitz, after a 30 year career at LPS, is a part-time industrial technology teacher.

• Sr. Gabriel Perry is a part-time Pre-Calculus teacher.

• Grace Raun (2009 Pius X Alumna) is a part-time Academic Decathlon teacher.

After our unprecedented time away and with new appreciation, I welcome all of our new and veteran staff and students. Together we will have a tremendous, albeit difficult year. Our theme this year is to surrender. My prayer mantra this year is the Serenity Prayer.

God grant me the Serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And the Wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time.
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as he did, this sinful world as it is,
Not as I would like it.
Trusting that he will make all things right,
If I surrender to his will.
That I may be reasonably happy in this world
And supremely happy in the next.

As we embark on another school year, I thank you in advance for your support and help. Let us work together to help our children stay safe and healthy, and to help them grow to become more other-centered, better critical thinkers, and stronger witnesses of Christ and His Gospel to the world. Let us pray constantly pray for each other and our students.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Father Jim Meysenburg
Chief Administrative Officer

Pius X
