Students for Life chalked messages of support for the Herrera family on the morning of September 15.
The messages included “God bless the police” and “God bless the Herrera family” along with Officer Mario Herrera’s badge number.
“I like how everybody got to get together and we all got to show our support to the officer, and we got to do it through chalk so everybody can see,” junior Genevieve Seeman said.
Students for Life sponsor Karen Bonkiewicz’s favorite quote was John 15:13 that says “Greater love hath no man than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
“It wasn’t really done for anybody except the Herrera family or also those kids who have parents who are police officers,” Bonkiewicz said. “So, I hope it brought comfort to those who have family or friends in the police department or as first responders.”
Even though police officers are a controversial topic right now, senior Keagan Callahan hopes that everyone is able to be respectful and positive.
“I think it’s a nice way to show our support because it puts it out there that Pius really does love and care about their family here,” Callahan said. “I hope that everyone can embrace it in a positive way, especially because Celia is from our school and just show support for her and her family.”
In years past when Students for Life chalked messages, they would stick to pro-life messages, but this year Bonkiewicz decided to do something different.
“I taught the three older [Herrera] kids and I have Celia in class and my brother is a police officer as well,” Bonkiewicz said. “As the pro-life club we want to support all life from womb to tomb and any life that is lost in such a horrific way is a tragedy and so we want to honor that life.”
