Bolts Beat Bearcats in State Quarterfinals

Story by Abbie Russman

The varsity boys basketball team won their quarterfinal game against Scottsbluff 83-43.

The Bolts were seeded first in Class B, and Scottsbluff was seeded eighth.

The Bolts have been preparing a long time for this game.

“We’ve really been preparing for this time of year since the [Creighton] Prep game last year,” junior Kolbe Rada said. “We were definitely ready today and we came out firing.”

This was an important win for the Bolts, because Pius X has lost in the first round of State the past two years.

The starters were seniors Holton Harman, Charlie Easley and Austin Jablonski, and juniors Rada and Mitchell Sebek.

Scottsbluff got the tipoff and the first basket. Easley scored the first points for Pius X and ended the game with 20 points.

The players focused on defense against their opponents.

“Scottsbluff has the potential to be really good but we were well prepared and played really good defense,” Rada said.

At halftime, Pius X was in the lead 48-26.

At one point in time during the fourth quarter, the Bolts were up by 43 points.

The boys focused on playing the game the best they could.

“We all went out there and played our game,” Sebek said. “We went out and did what we needed to do to help us advance.”

The Bolts will play Skutt Catholic at 2 pm at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Friday.

“We don’t have time to celebrate this one because we have to refocus for Skutt,” Rada said. “They will be a really tough matchup, but if we play defense and move the ball like we did today, I like our chances.”

The boys are hoping to get another win.

Sebek said, “[We’re] hoping for a big crowd and a Thunderbolt victory!”
