Cross country teams see success at North Star Invite

The cross country team participated in the second annual Lincoln North Star Running Gators Cross Country Invitational at Pioneers Park on Thursday, Sept. 26.

The junior varsity girls ran first. Pius X filled the leaderboard with seven runners placing in the top 15, earning them first place out of all the junior varsity girls teams. Senior Carly Abel finished third, junior Maddy Fitzgerald finished second and sophomore Helena Occansey finished first.

Many of the girls had their best runs of the season.

“Everyone was supposed to PR [personal record],” senior Campbell Mandery said. “It was the perfect weather to.”

Coach Lexi Woita agreed with Mandery about the runners breaking their personal records.

“Almost all our girls beat personal records,” Woita said. “We had everyone finish.”

Next to run were the junior varsity boys. Senior Joey Boes was the first out of the Pius X runners to finish. He finished fourth place, and the junior varsity team got runner-up.

The nice weather made a huge impact on the races.

“The nice drop in temperature helped us run fast,” senior Edward Bosland said. “Running with other Pius runners helped me go fast.”

Senior student manager Claire Wackel watched and cheered on the runners.

“We were expecting a really good run,” Wackel explained. “There was good weather and we were on our home course so they felt good running it.”

The varsity girls ran next. Senior Lizzy Kramer finished first both for Pius X and out of all the varsity girl runners. Pius X varsity girls won first overall out of the rest of the varsity girls teams.

Varsity boys ran last. Senior Gavin Skorupa was the first Pius X runner to finish, coming in fourth place. Pius X varsity boys finished runner-up.
