Pius X celebrated the school’s 60th year of wrestling this season with eight wrestlers going to State. They competed at Districts in class A this past Saturday and received a handful of state qualifiers.
Senior Nicholas McCarthy has been a part of Thunderbolt wrestling since his freshman year. McCarthy explained how his final year was more important than ever before.
“Being a senior this year there was a lot more pressure to make it, because not only I’ve been putting in the work the past four years the coaches have been putting in the work as well.” McCarthy said.
McCarthy went on to talked about the goals he set for himself the beginning of the season.
“A lot of people would say ‘get number one at the tournament’ or ‘go to State‘. My goals for the season were higher intensity and recover faster. I definitely feel like not only did I reached those goals, but the team as well.” McCarthy said.
McCarthy placed 4th at 138 lbs. and qualified for State.
Senior Andrew Ellerbee has also been apart of the team since freshman year. Ellerbee expressed what was going through his head morning of Districts.
“I was just trying to think about what I had to do to and planning it all out. Looking at the bracket seeing what I had to do to win to get to State.” Ellerbee said.
Ellerbee finished 4th at 195 lbs. and qualified for the Class A state tournament. He talked about what pushed him to get to State in his last match.
“With the last match, the one that sent me to State that I had to win. I knew with being a Senior and knowing this will be the last time I wrestle, I knew I had to give it my all.” Ellerbee said.
The eight state qualifiers will be competing in Class A state wrestling tournament at CHI Health Center Omaha Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 14-16.
