Math team, students have strong showing at competition

The Pius X Math Team turned in an impressive performance at their recent competition in Omaha, finishing 13th out of 31 teams overall and 4th in their division, the aptly named “Gauss Division.”

Among many highlights, James Kruger earned a spot in the prestigious Justification Exam, placing in the top 50 of all students in the Multiple-Choice Exam. Harden Cederburg also made history for Pius X, qualifying for the head-to-head speed round after finishing 4th in the division’s preliminary speed round. He went on to win his first match before being eliminated in Round 2—an especially exciting achievement, as Pius X hasn’t had a speed round qualifier in more than a decade!

Within the Gauss Division, several students brought home individual honors:

  • James Kruger – 1st Place, 11th Grade Free Response
  • James Kruger – 2nd Place, 11th Grade Multiple Choice
  • Lucas Walker – 3rd Place, 11th Grade Free Response
  • Penny Willis – 4th Place, 11th Grade Free Response
  • Kaily Wesely – 4th Place, 12th Grade Free Response
  • Khue Le – 5th Place, 10th Grade Multiple Choice

The team—Marie Nguyen, Jennifer Vu, Penny Willis, McKenna Smith, Phil Le, Nathan Le, Khue Le, James Kruger, Kaily Wesely, Harden Cederburg, Lucas Walker, and Bao Nguyen—was led by sponsor Danielle Karre and parent sponsor Tricia Walker.
