HANDBOOK UPDATES for 2026-27

 

The Administrative Team’s goal is to make the handbook more concise, make it more reflective of our expectations and mission, and make updates based on our experiences and feedback this last year from staff, parents, and students. Below are notable changes that may impact your students:

Behavior/Consequences:

  • Referral Card System: Our demerit card will now be called a “referral” card as we transition to more positive language and pilot a new behavior data tracking system called SWIS. Over 25 staff members will be using this program throughout the year to better support our students, teachers, and parents as we look at a variety of trends.
    • Rather than focusing on what the students did wrong when receiving a referral, we will focus on if the students are struggling to follow our school-wide expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. This will initiate more constructive and restorative conversations.
    • Five referrals will still result in a detention; however, receiving a certain number of detentions each quarter results in further consequences:
      • Three detentions result in a parent meeting, school service project, and a loss of open period for seniors.
      • Six detentions result in a discipline contract in communication with parents, another school service project, and loss of all open periods for seniors.
  • Lunch Detentions: Detentions will be served during lunch instead of before school. If a lunch detention is missed, then it will be served after school. 
  • OSS: Out-of-School Suspensions will only be for students who pose a threat to others or themselves while they are at school. For those who pose no safety risks, this time will instead be filled with In-School-Suspensions and service projects.
Dress Code:
  • School Pants: School pants will no longer be limited by brand, but they must be navy or khaki dress pants–no jeans, cargo pants, or joggers/sweatpants.
  • Shorts Length: Shorts must be no shorter than fingertip length on all sides for both boys and girls.
  • Skirt Length: Skirts must be no shorter than fingertip length on all sides.
    • For skirts and shorts, if a student violates the length rule three times, they will no longer be allowed to wear a skirt or shorts for the remainder of the semester.
  • Hair, Piercings, & Tattoos: There aren’t any changes here, but I want to give reminders based off of last year:
    • Boys must be clean shaven, and hair must not extend past the top of the collar, the middle of the ear, or below the eyebrows. Girls must not dye their hair any non-natural colors.
    • All piercings beyond the allowed piercings must be removed no matter how recently it was pierced.
    • Tattoos must be covered.
Newly Approved Dual Credit Classes offered through NE Wesleyan:
  • AP Environmental Science – 4 college credits for BIO 1300
  • AP Human Geography – 3 college credits for GEOG 1520
  • Advanced Chemistry Principles I/Lab – 4 college credits for CHEM 1110/CHEM 1110L
