The track and field teams competed in districts on May 12 at Waverly. The girls team placed second and the boys team placed third.
There were several athletes who qualified for state. Among those were junior Scarlett Fulkerson, sophomore Alexis Pomajzl and junior Peter Winters.
Fulkerson ran in the 100-meter hurdles, the 300-meter hurdles and the 4×100. She qualified for state in the 100 hurdles and the 4×100.
“It was a really good day, and I got a new PR,” Fulkerson said. “I made it to state in two events so that was super fun.”
Pomajzl competed in high jump and beat her past personal record by four inches.
“It was satisfying to be able to PR again by a lot, and it made me feel good about myself,” Pomajzl said.
Pomajzl was surprised that she made it to state but looks forward to going.
“It’s definitely weird because I’ve never been on varsity, so I wasn’t expecting to go but I’m just excited to be able to compete,” Pomajzl said.
Winters ran in the 4×800 and the 4×400. The 4×800 team placed first, and the 4×400 team placed fifth.
“When I got the baton, the only thing going through my mind was ‘state, state, state,’” Winters said. “At state, we’re planning on breaking the record for the 4×800, so that’s what was going through my mind. That’s all I was thinking about the whole time.”
The atmosphere at districts was filled with energy and excitement for the athletes.
“It was really hot but also really positive,” Fulkerson said. “Everybody was hyping each other up and more people were watching other races. It was cool to see everybody cheer each other on.”
The state meet will take place on May 20-21 at Burke Stadium in Omaha.
