The 2026 Outstanding Alumni Award is presented in appreciation of Mary (Morrow) Arth ’61, whose exemplary service and leadership in the Lincoln community and Diocese of Lincoln are fulfilling the Pius X High School vision to “Restore All Things in Christ.”
Mary graduated from Pius X High School in 1961, and from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1965. She married Larry Arth ‘61 in 1966. They had three children: Laura, Susie ’89, and Bill ’97. Her granddaughter Cecilia will graduate from Pius X in 2030.
Mary loves Lincoln and believes in making it an even more wonderful city. She is most proud of having served as the chairwoman of the Lincoln Parks Foundation Board where she was pivotal in the renewal and planting of the Sunken Gardens. The local arts are important to Mary, especially the Lied Center where she has served on the board. Mary served on the commission that established the Food Bank of Lincoln which is such a vital part of our community today. The Lincoln Children’s Zoo is special to her, and she has given tours to school children there. The Junior League of Lincoln has been an important part of her local involvement. Former Governor Johanns appointed Mary to serve on the Judicial Nominating Commission to help find the next Nebraska Supreme Court Justice. Mary and Larry were members of the leadership committee for A Tradition of Faith campaign in 2006.
Mary Arth shared what is important for the Pius X community to know about her: “I strongly believe in Catholic education. My husband and I would not have been capable on our own of educating our children in matters of faith, morals, and the sacraments. That was the gift my parents gave to me and that I gave to my children.”
