English I students create “Romeo and Juliet” projects

The English I classes are currently working on their “Romeo and Juliet” final project.

The classes can create anything they want as long as it relates to “Romeo and Juliet.”

“I am always amazed by the talent of our Pius X students,” English I teacher Jennifer Sander said. “Kids always tend to pick something that they enjoy doing or they feel like they are gifted in. I have had beautiful singers, I have had dancers. The movies are always fun.”

Sander has seen a wide variety of projects over the years.

“I have done them every year for 26 years,” Sander said. “I created them and then as kids started to get permission to do other projects I just added to the list to get some new ideas and every year kids come up with new projects.”

One student who wanted to do something new for the project is freshman Gabriel Callahan.

“I am working on rewriting the play in modern English language,” Callahan said.

Callahan thought the hardest part about the project was translating the story.

“Understanding the language and translating into something the other people can understand,” Callahan said.

Callahan enjoys being able to tell the story in an exciting way.

“I feel it is just being able to tell ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in a new fun way that other people will understand,” Callahan said.

Most of the freshmen students are making movies to watch in class. One of those students is freshman Ell Koenig.

“I am making a movie with my friends based on a slightly more humorous version of the script,” Koenig said.

Koenig liked to write the script for the movie.

“I loved the script making,” Koenig said. “I find it so funny and being able to translate the play into modern English. Acting out my scenes were also fun loosening up and getting into character and following a script.”

The hardest part for Koenig was scheduling.

“Getting everyone together, making sure everyone does their part, and making sure everyone was showing up and doing all their work,” Koenig said.
