Student receives anointing of the sick during theology class

Fr. Augustine Reimers performed the sacrament of anointing of the sick on a junior student during his seventh period theology class on May 8.

“This is the first time I am performing this sacrament on a student,” Reimers said.

Junior Elaine Ho is getting a surgery that requires her to be put under anesthesia.

“I thought that getting this sacrament would be a beneficial thing to do before my surgery,” Ho said.

Ho told Reimers about her surgery and he offered to perform the sacrament.

“The graces of the sacraments are real, and we can anoint anyone who is getting surgery which is helpful for soul and body,” Reimers said.

Reimers believed he could use this as a good teaching opportunity and believed it was important for students to see the sacrament.

“I had never seen this sacrament before, so it was really cool to see, and I was very happy for Elaine,” junior Bethany Budell said.

Anointing of the sick is a sacrament that can be performed multiple times in a person’s lifetime and can be done before a major surgery.
