What to expect at Sunday evening’s band concert: Rolling Thunder!

Watch out for the Rolling Thunder this Sunday evening!

The bands at Pius X Catholic High School will host a concert at 7pm this Sunday in the Bishop Flavin Gym. This is the 65th year of a band at Pius X. Here’s a preview of a few songs:

There are a variety of pieces and many of them are tied into the 65 years but one to point out in particular is called ‘Homage’. It was commissioned by former Pius X band director Mike Murphy and was written for the band in 2007. Mr. Murphy, as many know him, was the band director for 29 years and then worked in our elementary schools for another 8.

The Orchestra is playing a variety of fantastic pieces, including a movement of a Haydn Symphony, which is 265 years old and has that classical sound you may be used to hearing from orchestras.

The concert will conclude with a piece called ‘Rolling Thunder’. “Super-fast and very challenging!”, band director Jared Wilhelm said. “A few years ago the band picked up the nickname Rolling Thunder for the marching band and the students have come to love the name so we felt like it was a fitting way to end the concert.”
