Science teacher Jesse Andres’ AP Biology class visited Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo on Wednesday, May 7.
The field trip is part of a long-standing tradition that pre-dates Andres’ time as an AP Bio teacher at Pius X.
“The trip pays homage to the diversity of our planet and also helps build up an AP learning community,” Andres said.
The cost of the trip for a student was a mere $9.50 for a whole day of fun at the zoo.
New to this year’s trip were custom AP Bio “Zoo Trip” t-shirts.
“The shirts were a new thing designed and made completely by our new AP Bio club,” Andres said.
When traversing the zoo, students played a scavenger hunt bingo game, where they needed to locate and find things they had discussed in class.
“I got to observe the features of certain animals and understand why they look the way they do because of natural selection,” senior Sam Reif said.
Besides offering students a chance to see the concepts they’ve learned this year, the zoo also served as a fun end of the year getaway.
“I saw some cool gorillas and monkeys,” senior Rylan Brandl said.
A question of “could AP bio students beat a gorilla?” loomed on the mind of many students throughout the day.
“We went to the gorilla enclosure and analyzed the gorilla’s size and features and concluded that by using natural selection our AP Bio boys could make a silverback gorilla back down,” Andres said.
