Announcement of new Pope sparks emotions

Pope Leo XIV was announced Thursday morning. Pius X was very enthusiastic in classrooms and halls.

“Our teacher promised us that if the pope was elected during class, then we could go into the hallway to celebrate,” senior Malina Odgaard said. “I was very surprised; the speed of the election was not expected.”

The pope’s background was the biggest surprise.

“Nobody was expecting the pope to be from America,” Odgaard said. “I thought it was cool, especially the fact he’s spent a lot of time in Peru.”

There were some that were very overjoyed when they found out.

“This is actually my fourth conclave for me in my life,” assistant principal Josh Kirkwood said. “It makes me happy that we have a new pope.”

There are many emotions around the announcement.

“Politics are always in play but in this case, I do not believe that was a bad thing,” Fr. Winters said. “He appears to have a heart for dialogue for connecting with the poor or struggling.”

Pius X was not the only one having emotions with the announcement.

“Some people thought maybe he didn’t want to be there,” Winters said. “I do not know what his exact emotions were, but he seemed touched by the world wanting him to be their father, it’s very emotional. His name, if it’s like Leo XIII, he’ll be just fine.”
