Students create Paschal candle for Lincoln parish

Every year during the Easter Vigil Mass, a new Paschal candle is lit. This year, one of the candles is a bit different.

Wick and Wax Lincoln co-founders Stephen Miriovsky and Drew Hughes are back at it again, this time with a larger than ever church candle.

“We made a Paschal candle for Easter that will be used at the upcoming Mass and all the sacraments done throughout the 2025 paschal year,” Miriovsky said.

The duo of Pius X seniors has spent the last three months collecting and repurposing used altar candles to give them new life.

“This candle is significant because it represents a lot in the church but also because for us it represents us crossing a huge barrier in the candle industry,” Hughes said.

With the permission and help of Fr. Liam O’Shea Creal, the candle will find a home in the North American Martyrs church.

While the duo made the candle, to go the extra mile they recruited senior Drew Sousek to add a custom acrylic painted design.

“Fr. O’Shea wanted it to resemble North American Martyrs,” Sousek said. “So, I made sure to add elements like feathers, lilies and fleur-de-lis with the color maroon.”

It also had the necessary aspects of a paschal candle such as the alpha and omega symbol, the date, a cross and two banners enclosing everything else.

“I thought designing the candle would be something fun to do because it relates to my faith and is something I love to do,” Sousek said.

The culmination of the three students’ hard work will be lit Saturday night at the North American Martyrs Easter Vigil Mass.
