Computer Network and Internet Acceptable Use Policy

COMPUTER NETWORK AND INTERNET ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY
In an increasingly digital world, Pius X High School recognizes that today’s graduate needs to have experience using technology and must know how to use it well to support learning and productivity. To this end, Pius X provides computers (including iPads) with internet access for use before and after school, during study halls, and in certain classes. In keeping with the federal Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), all student activity is filtered. Students’ personal devices are not allowed to connect to the Pius X network, nor can they be used to access the internet during the school day.Students are expected to use technology in an ethical and moral manner. Accessing information or using computers in any way counter to the Pius X mission statement (such as accessing or posting to sites which include, pornography, bigotry, hate, violence or other criminal behavior, or information on illegal drug use) is not allowed. Students doing research on controversial issues must receive permission from their teacher/sponsor before using internet sites. Students are not to use computers for instant messaging, social networking, conducting financial transactions, or for other personal gain. Personal email must only be used for academic purposes. The following actions/behaviors are specifically prohibited:

  • Altering computer settings or adding software to computers without permission
  • ‘Hacking’ or unauthorized access of logins, software, or files
  • Attempting to bypass internet filters
  • Unlawful downloading of content in violation of copyright or license agreements
  • Plagiarism
  • Using Pius X’s name, motto or logo on any website without permission from school administrators
  • Negative or unjust portrayals of school or persons associated with the school on any website

Anything transmitted on the network is the property of the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln and may be monitored by the administration and faculty.

Students may be supervised and guided in their use of the internet, but it is the student’s responsibility to use the system in accordance with the rules. The school administration and faculty will decide whether an act constitutes inappropriate use of the school computers, its network or the internet. Any action, whether initiated inside or outside of school, that is prohibited in this policy or that insults or harasses another student, staff or faculty member may be subject to disciplinary action. Any violation of this acceptable use policy may result in demerits, detention, immediate suspension of internet privileges and/or access to Pius X computers, parent conference, payment of damages or other more serious disciplinary action as deemed appropriate by the Pius X Administration.
