Students in Biology and Advanced Biology classes have been learning about DNA, chromosomes and genetics, and today heard from a class visitor about her genetic disorder, Holt-Oram Syndrome (Hand and Heart disorder). The guest, Chloe, is the sister of Biology teacher Mikeala Petersen. She was born with a heart defect that required surgery and was born with no radius bones and no thumbs on both of her arms and hands. She’s now a senior in high school and can relate easily to fellow students. She talked about living with her condition and the students had chances to ask her questions. Following this presentation, students had the chance to research a genetic disorder of their choice.
