Journalists attend statewide convention

Journalism students from around Nebraska came together at the UNL Student Union Monday for a journalism workshop.

They began with a whole group assembly where Alyssa Schukar, a Washington DC based photographer and journalist, shared her story of growing up in rural Nebraska and how that experience has impacted her work in journalism.

“The best stories are often about more than one thing,” Schukar said.

After Schukar’s presentation, numerous awards were given out and Pius X received a Cornhusker for last year’s yearbook.

Next, the group split into different workshops of their choosing. The topics covered ranged from video stories to sports coverage, and everything in between.

After completing two of these workshops, the students were dismissed to find food somewhere on campus or downtown.

After the lunch break, they returned for two more workshops that sparked their interest.

“I liked the event and I’m glad it’s an annual thing,” Pius X journalist Easton Beekman said. “You can go there, sharpen your skills, learn a thing or two, sharpen your stories and come back next year.”
