In Shiela Sievert’s AP Human Geography class, students share facts and food from a chosen country every Friday.

“I work my AP kids very hard Monday through Thursday, so I wanted Fridays to still involve learning but with more fun,” Sievert said.

She has nicknamed this day FAC Friday, for food and culture Friday.

Students enjoy classes on Fridays because they get to learn about different cultures while doing hands-on activities.

“Fridays are my favorite day in AP Hug because of the food we get to eat and the way we learn about these countries,” sophomore Brynn Ulrich said.

This Friday, students learned about immigration policies from their third world country of choice.

“I made them pick a third world country to research because they aren’t talked about enough, and I wanted people to understand why they are still important,” Sievert said.

They shared why each country has their policies and explained why people are not moving to that country.

Sophomore Reese Hacker brought in honey iced bread inspired by a common Yemen delicacy.

“It was really fun making a dessert from another culture, and sharing with the class made it special,” Hacker said.

The food and facts not only get students excited to learn but they also get to display all their knowledge through presentations.

“Not only am I getting food, I’m also working on my presentation skills and public speaking,” sophomore Erica Horne said.

Learning about these underdeveloped countries in a more interactive way has made students more excited to learn.

“On Fridays, everyone walks into my classroom with a smile on their faces, and that’s why I do FACs,” Sievert said.
