Students and staff of Pius X celebrated the Epiphany Mass on Jan 5. This mass was cancelled last year due to Covid conditions.
As everyone entered the gym, there was a slideshow of students of many different cultures holding their flag. One of these students was junior Ana Da Silva, who held the Brazilian flag.
“It was really nice because I got to know another Brazilian kid who goes to this school and I really like representing my country,” Da Silva said.
Co-Chaplain Fr. Joseph Bernardo took to the mic and led the assembly in a decade of the rosary for Pope Benedict XVI whose funeral was being held the same day. Students later finished the rosary in their 5th period classes.
To celebrate the different cultures, the readings, responsorial psalm, and the intentions of the Mass were all said in different languages by students. Da Silva was glad that Pius X gave her the opportunity to read at the Mass.
“It shows that they care,” Da Silva said. “They embrace everyone, and I think that is very nice and very loving.”
When the Mass concluded, a group of students performed a dance dressed as colorful lions.
“It’s called the Lion Dance and it is a cultural thing in Asia. It’s a way, during New Year’s, to spread good luck to people and businesses,” freshman Elaine Ho said.
